Tom Petty has always sounded like a hybrid of Dylan, Springsteen and Jackson Browne to me. Ok, not always, cuz I just pulled those names out of my ass, but they sound like decent touch points for a dude that has both some twang, snazzy keyboards, backing vocals (when with the Heartbreakers) and a whole shiteload of hits to his credit. Granted, this IS a greatest hits album, but there is literally not one filler song on this 18 track record. This represents many of my jukebox dollars over the years, as his music just invokes a positive drinking atmosphere and appeals to a wide spectrum of folks. Thinking about it, he even has more hits (sans Heartbreakers) that aren’t even on here. He may not have some of the flash and instant name recognition, but this guy has kicked ass for decades now. Solid.
