As the front man for Menomena, Brent Knopf makes great sounding, big music. Ramona Falls is his solo outlet to explore his inner singer songwriter, making great sounding smaller music. Ramona Falls strips out most of the bleeps and bloops and layered bombast, employing acoustic guitars, strings, piano and his trademark gnarly-produced percussion sounds. I could see this and a Jeremy Enigk solo record going head to head for one’s affection, though there’s always something thoroughly modern sounding about this album despite it not being in a modern style. Odd, but true.
